Snowy Owl
Ueno Zoological Gardens, commonly known as Ueno Zoo, is home to the snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus), a captivating bird native to the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. These owls are renowned for their striking white plumage and piercing yellow eyes.
Exhibit Location: The snowy owl exhibit is situated in the East Area of Ueno Zoo, alongside other avian species such as pheasants and various raptors.
Physical Characteristics:
- Plumage: Males are predominantly white, while females and juveniles display dark spots and barring.
- Size: They are among the largest owl species, with a wingspan reaching up to 5 feet (1.5 meters).
- Eyes: Their vivid yellow eyes are adapted for hunting in low-light conditions.
Behavior and Diet:
Snowy owls are diurnal hunters, primarily preying on lemmings, rodents, and other small mammals. Their exceptional vision and hearing enable them to detect prey beneath snow-covered terrain.
