Fujifilm Reviews

During a brief hiatus in my long history with Canon, I spent some time with Fujifilm—a sort of photographic detour while waiting for Canon to fully enter the mirrorless space. It was an interesting phase, one that offered a few fresh perspectives, but ultimately didn’t resonate with me the way Canon—or later, Leica—did. Fujifilm cameras certainly have their charm. The retro-inspired design, the tactile dials, and the compact form factor appeal to a specific kind of photographer. On paper, it all sounds appealing, and to many, it genuinely is.

But in practice, I found the handling to be a bit counterintuitive. The layout felt more like a stylistic statement than a tool crafted for seamless operation. While I appreciate Fuji’s commitment to a unique design philosophy, it just never clicked for me—literally or figuratively. Then there’s the color science. Fujifilm is often praised for its film simulations and nostalgic tones, but I found myself missing the natural warmth and faithful rendering of Canon’s color output. Fuji’s images often leaned a little too stylized for my taste—almost as if the camera had already decided what mood I was going for, without consulting me first.

And while we’re being honest, the customer service experience left something to be desired. Compared to Canon—and especially Leica—Fujifilm’s support felt less responsive, less invested. When you’re dealing with precision tools and time-sensitive work, that kind of difference becomes noticeable very quickly. In the end, my time with Fujifilm was brief and ultimately transitional. It served a purpose during a waiting period, but never quite felt like home. I returned to Canon with a newfound appreciation for its consistency, and later embraced Leica for its craftsmanship—but Fuji, while interesting, was a chapter that closed without much longing.
