Ueno Zoo in Tokyo is home to black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus), small, burrowing rodents native to North America. These social animals are known for their intricate underground colonies, called “towns,” and their distinctive vocalizations that resemble a dog’s bark. While not currently endangered, prairie dogs play a crucial role in their native ecosystems. Ueno Zoo’s exhibit helps educate the public about their ecological importance and the conservation efforts needed to preserve their habitats.
Exhibit Location: The prairie dog exhibit is situated in the East Garden of Ueno Zoo, alongside other species such as Asian elephants, Sumatran tigers, and western lowland gorillas.
Behavior and Viewing: Visitors can observe prairie dogs engaging in natural behaviors like foraging, digging, and social interactions. Their playful antics and communal lifestyle make them a favorite among zoo-goers.
Recent Highlights: In May 2024, Ueno Zoo celebrated the birth of several prairie dog pups, delighting visitors with their playful activities.
