Liuhe Night Market
The Liuhe Night Market is often referred to as the “tourist” night market of Kaohsiung, though it’s hard to see why—there didn’t seem to be many tourists around, certainly fewer than at Ruifeng Night Market. Liuhe stands out for its focus on seafood, with stalls offering everything from crab, shrimp, octopus, to squid. Some vendors operate like mini-restaurants, where you can pick your seafood fresh and then head to the back to sit at a table while it’s prepared.
That said, the real charm lies in sitting at the plastic tables and chairs right in the middle of the street. It’s casual, fun, and feels like you’re truly part of the night market buzz. The quality of the food was noticeably better than at Ruifeng, a sentiment my Chinese friends agreed with. Liuhe was also where we had the chance to try snake—definitely a unique experience that added to the night’s adventure!
The people eating at Liuhe Night Market create a lively and eclectic atmosphere, showcasing the market’s mix of local charm and subtle tourist appeal. Families with kids can be seen sharing platters of fresh seafood, their laughter blending with the sizzle of grills and the chatter of vendors. Groups of friends gather at the plastic tables, cracking crab legs or slurping bowls of noodles, enjoying the relaxed vibe of dining right in the street.
Locals dominate the scene, savoring their favorite dishes with the ease of regulars, but you’ll also spot curious travelers exploring the unique offerings, often with a mix of excitement and hesitation as they try new foods like squid skewers or snake soup. The dynamic energy is contagious, with diners swapping tips on the best stalls or offering a smile as you pass by. It’s not just a meal—it’s a social event, with strangers and friends alike coming together over delicious food in the vibrant heart of Kaohsiung.
Eating at Liuhe Night Market was such a fun experience—partly because of the incredible seafood, but mostly because of the spontaneous, laid-back vibe. Picking dishes at random from the stalls, not always sure what we were getting, added an adventurous twist to the evening. The best part, though, was mingling with the locals. Whether it was sharing a table with friendly strangers or chatting with vendors about their specialties, the sense of community made the meal unforgettable. It felt less like dining and more like being part of a lively street festival.
