Ginza Seiko
Ah, the Seiko Clock Tower in Ginza—a monument that’s been keeping Tokyo punctual since 1894. Perched at the Ginza 4-chome intersection, this clock tower has witnessed the evolution of the city, from horse-drawn carriages to bustling modernity.
The original clock tower was the brainchild of Kintarō Hattori, Seiko’s founder, who believed that a public clock would serve the people of Ginza. After the Great Kantō Earthquake in 1923 derailed reconstruction plans, the current building was completed in 1932, designed by Jin Watanabe in an art deco-influenced neoclassical style. Its curved granite façade and clock tower have become central landmarks in the district.
In 2022, to mark the 90th anniversary of this edifice, Seiko launched a new project, renaming the building SEIKO HOUSE. This initiative aims to provide a platform dedicated to Japanese technology and craftsmanship, focusing on how cutting-edge technology and the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship will shape a more exciting and sustainable future.
For those eager to delve deeper into Seiko’s rich history, the Seiko Museum Ginza is a stone’s throw away. This museum offers a comprehensive look into the company’s evolution, showcasing everything from the first Seiko clocks to modern innovations. It’s a haven for horology enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
