Kamakura

Kamakura, a historic city just south of Tokyo, is often referred to as the “Kyoto of the East” for its rich cultural heritage and serene atmosphere. Once the political center of Japan during the Kamakura period, the city is renowned for its iconic landmarks, including the Great Buddha of Kotoku-in, a towering bronze statue that has stood for centuries. Kamakura is also home to tranquil temples and shrines such as Hasedera Temple, with its sweeping views of the coastline, and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the city’s most important Shinto shrine. The area’s charming streets are lined with shops, cafes, and stalls selling local specialties like matcha-flavored treats and street food. Beyond its cultural sites, Kamakura’s sandy beaches, such as Yuigahama, attract surfers and visitors looking for a seaside escape. With its mix of history, spirituality, and coastal charm, Kamakura offers a relaxing and enriching getaway from the urban bustle of Tokyo. Here are some of the photos I captured during my visits. Enjoy your virtual tour!
