Ouchijuku
Ouchijuku, a quaint village along the historic Aizu West Road, is a picturesque step back in time. Nestled among lofty mountains, this former Edo-period post town once served as a vital link between Aizu Wakamatsu in Fukushima Prefecture and Imaichi in Tochigi Prefecture, with goods like straw rice sacks transported along its route. The village retains its charm with traditional thatched-roof buildings and a rustic atmosphere that feels untouched by modernity.
When I visited, it was cold but not freezing, and the fresh snow from the previous nights created an almost magical setting. The main path, though, requires some care—when wet, it turns into a muddy challenge, so sturdy shoes are a must. Despite that, wandering through Ouchijuku was an incredible experience, capturing a perfect balance of history, culture, and natural beauty.
