Best Desktop Audio
With Spotify finally available in Japan, I decided it was time to upgrade my computer speakers. After thorough online research, listening tests at Yodobashi Camera, and an expensive disappointment with a pair of Audioengine HD3s I imported from the US, I think I’ve nailed the perfect setup. Compact enough to fit on my desk, reasonably priced for the performance, and most importantly, delivering exceptional sound—detailed yet smooth, and powerful without being muddy.
Amplifier and DAC: TEAC AI-301DA, a sleek all-aluminum package connected to my iMac via USB. It’s compact and performs brilliantly. The TEAC AI-301DA is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a compact, high-performance amplifier and DAC combo. Its excellent sound quality, modern feature set, and stylish design make it ideal for desktop setups or small listening areas. While not designed for large spaces or ultra-demanding setups, it delivers exceptional value for its size and price.
Speakers: Dali Zensor Pico. It took some time to find the right match, but once I heard them, I was sold. They may be small, but the sound is anything but. The bass quality, given their size, is absolutely astonishing.
The TEAC AI-301DA is a compact yet highly capable amplifier and DAC designed for modern audio setups. Encased in a sleek aluminum chassis, it combines style with functionality, offering an excellent solution for those looking to enhance their desktop or small-room audio systems. Its Class D amplifier delivers 40 watts per channel (into 4 ohms), providing clean and dynamic sound, while the integrated DAC supports high-resolution audio formats, including PCM up to 192kHz/24-bit and DSD 2.8/5.6MHz, ensuring detailed and accurate playback.
One of the standout features of the AI-301DA is its versatility. It includes multiple digital inputs (USB, coaxial, and optical) for connecting computers, TVs, or other digital sources, as well as Bluetooth with aptX for high-quality wireless streaming. This makes it perfect for users who rely on digital audio sources but still want an audiophile-grade experience. The USB input is particularly noteworthy, offering asynchronous data transfer for improved audio fidelity from a PC or Mac.
In terms of sound quality, the AI-301DA excels in delivering detailed, balanced audio with excellent separation and clarity. Highs are crisp without being harsh, mids are smooth and natural, and bass is tight and controlled. While it may not provide enough power for large, demanding speakers or large rooms, it pairs exceptionally well with efficient bookshelf speakers in near-field or small-to-medium setups.
The device’s compact footprint makes it a great fit for desktop setups, and its build quality is excellent, with a premium feel. However, the absence of analog inputs might be a limitation for users with turntables or older analog equipment. Still, for those focused on digital audio, the TEAC AI-301DA offers a powerful, modern solution with impressive performance for its size and price.
The Dali Zensor Pico is a compact powerhouse that delivers sound far beyond its size. With a minimalist Scandinavian design and solid construction, these speakers fit seamlessly into small spaces or desktop setups. Despite their modest dimensions, the Picos boast a refined, high-quality finish that feels premium and sturdy.
What truly sets the Zensor Pico apart is its sound quality. The highs are crisp and clear, offering remarkable detail without any harshness, while the midrange is full and natural, making vocals and instruments shine. The bass, although limited by the speaker’s size, is tight and well-controlled, providing just enough depth to make music and movies engaging. Paired with a subwoofer, the Picos transform into an even more capable system.
Their wide soundstage and precise imaging make for an immersive listening experience, particularly in smaller rooms. Thanks to rear ports tuned for easy placement, they perform well even when positioned near walls. While they might not fill a large space with sound or satisfy bass enthusiasts without a subwoofer, the Zensor Pico excels in delivering balanced and detailed audio.
Perfect for small rooms, desktop setups, or as part of a 5.1 system, the Dali Zensor Pico is a versatile and impressive option. Compact yet mighty, it’s a speaker that proves you don’t need a large footprint to achieve exceptional sound. For its price and size, it’s a truly outstanding choice.
