Leica Reviews
The Leica M system is a legendary rangefinder lineup that has remained a favourite among photographers for decades. Introduced in 1954 with the Leica M3, the system is known for its precision engineering, compact design, and fully manual shooting experience. The “M” stands for Messsucher (German for “rangefinder”), reflecting its unique focusing mechanism, which allows for discreet, intuitive shooting without the need for autofocus or electronic viewfinders.
After growing tired of lugging around a heavy kit full of bulky lenses, I decided to switch to the Leica M11, my first Leica, and I’m absolutely loving the experience so far. The appeal of a compact, lightweight system with high-quality M-mount lenses was too strong to ignore. Leica M lenses are renowned for their exceptional optical quality, characterful rendering, and small form factor—making them ideal for travel, street, and documentary photography.
Does it take better photos? I would say not necessarily. But is it a more enjoyable experience? Definitely, yes. It’s a bit like driving an air-cooled Porsche 911 versus the latest generation, or listening to vinyl records instead of Spotify. There’s a certain charm, a tactile connection to the process that makes photography feel more deliberate and rewarding. Despite digital advancements, the Leica M system has stayed true to its roots, maintaining a minimalist design that prioritises craftsmanship and image quality. Whether shooting film or digital, M cameras offer a tactile, immersive experience that rewards patience and skill—qualities that have made them beloved by professionals and enthusiasts alike.
